In Cuddalore, Tamil Nadu, Annamalai University for Distance Education was established in 1979. The AICTE, UGC, MCI, DCI, and NCTE all recognize AU, and in 2014, NAAC gave it an "A." Additionally, it provides DEC-approved online learning programs (Distance Education Council). Through its online learning program, Annamalai University provides access to more than 500 courses.

It is also the first college in India to provide online or distance-learning postgraduate (PG) degree programs in law, biotechnology, zoology, chemistry, and physics.
